Halaal Fast Food South Africa: How to Check Your Branch

Consuming halal is an essential part of the Islamic faith, and if you are searching for whether a fast food chain is halaal in South Africa, you will find confident answers that contradict each other. One page says KFC is certified nationwide. Another says only some branches are. SANHA says it has never certified a single KFC store. All three are being published right now. So make sure to check halaal certification bodies in south africa carefully before buying any food item.

We don’t make this confusion more by adding unreal truth, so we are discussing on this page why the answers conflict when searching halaal fast food South Africa and show you how to check your own branch against the certifying bodies. That is the only answer that survives contact with reality, because certification here is granted branch by branch rather than to a brand as a whole.

Why the Answers Conflict

Halaal Fast Food South Africa

There is no one single authority for halaal in South Africa. There are four separate bodies to certify, and each certifies different places, so a restaurant can be certified by one but not the other. That’s why you’ll see the majority of the disclaimer about the subject.

The individual outlet is responsible for certification, not the brand. One steer could be certified while the other isn’t, and thus a brand-level answer is the wrong answer to the question.
Then there’s the matter of whose bodies you will accept. This is a matter of opinion among Muslims, and arbitration by a price guide does not solve it for you. Lastly, status update(s) are made silently. Occasionally, certification can expire or may be issued without leaving any public record, so what is true at a particular time may be incorrect at a later time. Including this one.

The Four Halaal Certifying Bodies for Halaal Fast Food South Africa

BodyFoundedBase
MJC Halaal Trust (MJCHT)1945Athlone, Cape Town
National Independent Halaal Trust (NIHT)1992Lenasia, Johannesburg
South African National Halaal Authority (SANHA)1996Durban, KwaZulu-Natal
Islamic Council of South Africa (ICSA)

The MJC Halaal Trust has been certifying for over 75 years and describes itself as the oldest halaal regulatory body in the world. It is strongest in the Western Cape and holds working relations with more than 40 halaal bodies internationally.

NIHT runs offices in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town, and lists 18 affiliated organisations including Ulama councils and butchers associations. It appears on JAKIM’s recognition list in Malaysia and on MUIS Singapore’s list of recognised foreign bodies, which matters if you care about international standing.

SANHA works nationally from offices in KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and the Western Cape, and keeps the largest searchable directory of certified establishments in the country.

How to Check Your Branch

Each body publishes its own directory, and searching them takes under a minute.

BodyWhere to check
SANHAsanha.org.za certified establishments
NIHThalaal.org.za directory
MJC Halaal Trustmjchalaaltrust.co.za client list

SANHA’s is the most usable of the three. It carries over 2,500 entries, filters by category, and searches by distance, so you can find certified outlets near you. Filter to Retail Outlets and individual restaurant branches come up by street address.

One warning about the MJC list. Their site currently carries a notice saying it is being updated, so a branch missing from it may reflect the update rather than its actual status. Phoning them is the safer check while that notice stands.

If a branch appears in none of the directories, ask the store to show you its certificate. Halaal certification bodies in South Africa outlets display one, and staff get asked this often enough that it is not an awkward question.

What a Real Certificate Looks Like

A valid certificate names the body that issued it, so the logo should identify SANHA, NIHT, MJCHT or ICSA. It will also carry an expiry date, and a certificate that lapsed two years ago is telling you something.

Arabic script reading حلال on its own, with no body named beside it, has not been through any audit. The same goes for a handwritten sign saying halaal in English. Neither is a certification, though both get mistaken for one.

The KFC Question

KFC is the clearest example of why brand-level answers fall apart, so it is worth setting out what each source actually says.

SANHA has stated publicly and more than once that it has never certified the KFC brand and that no KFC store holds SANHA certification. Speaking to Voice of the Cape, SANHA’s Ebi Lockhat said the brand has never been certified by SANHA and that not a single one of its stores is.

Other sources disagree about what that leaves. The Halal Times, writing in July 2026, describes the position as partial and contested, with some individual outlets in Cape Town and Gauteng certified by MJCHT or NIHT. Halal Code Check goes considerably further and describes KFC South Africa as fully certified through NIHT across every outlet in the country. Those two accounts cannot both hold, and public sources do not reconcile them.

So if your branch matters, check it individually against the NIHT and MJC directories and ask the store for its certificate. A blanket statement either way is not worth relying on, and that includes anything on this page.

Viral Messages and Withdrawn Certifications about Halaal Fast Food South Africa

Halaal status is a subject where false claims travel fast, usually as WhatsApp forwards.

In February 2025, a message was sent around stating that KFC’s halaal certificate and halaal meat had been revoked. SANHA halaal list South Africa, as it said it was misinformation, and pointed out that it had never certified KFC, so it could not withdraw from it. Previous forward announcements had been made regarding KFC’s chicken sourcing.

When a forward claims a chain has lost or gained certification, the certifying bodies publish notices on their own sites. Check there.

What to Check Halaal Fast Food , Chain by Chain

The table below gives no verdicts. It sets out what is worth checking for each chain, so you know which question to ask.

ChainWhat to check
KFCBranch level, against NIHT and MJC. SANHA states it certifies none.
SteersBranch level. Individual Steers outlets appear in SANHA’s directory.
PedrosBranch level. Individual Pedros outlets appear in SANHA’s directory.
Nando’sBranch level, though the chain is widely described as certified.
McDonald’sBranch level. Some outlets are described as halaal-only, others as mixed.
Hungry LionBranch level.
RocoMamasBranch level. The chain publishes a separate halaal menu, which implies both kinds of branch exist.
SpurBranch level. Some branches substitute macon for bacon on halaal menus.
Chicken LickenBranch level.
Ocean BasketBranch level. Seafood raises fewer issues, but sauces, sides and alcohol service vary.
Debonairs, Roman’s Pizza, PanarottisPork appears on standard menus. Check whether your branch runs a certified halaal menu.
WimpyBranch level. Pork appears on the breakfast menu.

Every row says roughly the same thing, which is the point. Certification in South African fast food is settled at branch level, and the directories above are how you settle it for the branch you actually walk into.

Why No Pork Does Not Mean Certified

This commonly confuses people. Certification includes the manner in which the animal is slaughtered, the source of the meat, storage practices, and whether fryers and surfaces are shared with non-halaal products. For example, a chicken-only outlet that doesn’t have a certification has not addressed those questions, no matter how clean its menu might appear.

It does the other way as well. A few certified outlets of chains that serve pork in their restaurants have an entirely separate pork menu and kitchen. The Spur is doing just that with its branches that are trading macon for bacon.

Halaal Fast Food: Quick Answers

Which fast food brands are halaal in South Africa?

Certification is granted branch by branch rather than to brands, so no reliable brand-level list exists. Individual Steers and Pedros outlets appear in SANHA’s directory, and other chains hold certification from NIHT or MJCHT at particular branches. Search the directories above for the branch you visit.

Is KFC halaal in South Africa?

SANHA has stated publicly that it has never certified KFC and that no KFC store holds its certification. Other sources report individual outlets certified by NIHT or MJCHT, and at least one claims nationwide NIHT certification. These accounts conflict. Check your branch against the NIHT and MJC directories and ask the store for its certificate.

Is McDonald’s halaal in South Africa?

McDonald’s South Africa is described as running halaal certification at most restaurants, with some branches serving halaal-only menus and others serving both. Because it varies, check your branch rather than assuming.

How do I verify a restaurant is halaal certified?

Search the SANHA, NIHT and MJC directories above, or ask the branch to show its certificate. A valid one names the issuing body and carries an expiry date. Arabic script alone, with no body named, has not been through an audit.

Are the certifying bodies interchangeable?

No. South Africa has four, and they certify different establishments. Which ones you accept is a religious question rather than a factual one, and worth raising with a scholar you trust if it matters to you.

Does a menu without pork mean the restaurant is halaal?

No. Certification covers slaughter method, sourcing, storage and contact with non-halaal items. A menu without pork has addressed none of those. Certification is a separate question entirely.

This page explains how to verify halaal certification in South Africa and links to the certifying bodies directly. It certifies nothing and is not a religious ruling. Certification is usually branch-specific and can change without public notice. Verify with SANHA, NIHT, MJCHT or ICSA, or with the branch itself, and consult a scholar you trust on which certifications you accept.
