Burger Prices in South Africa: Every Chain Compared (2026)

Quick answer: where is the cheapest burger?

The cheapest burgers in South Africa are chicken burgers: the KFC Snack Burger and the Hungry Lion Munch Burger both cost R24.90. The cheapest beef burger is the McDonald’s Hamburger at R26.90, R3 less than the Burger King Hamburger. For a full-size signature burger, the Burger King WHOPPER® (R69.90) is R3 cheaper than the Big Mac® (R72.90). At Steers, wait for Wednesday: Wacky Wednesday gets you two Original Burgers for R69.90, which works out to about R35 each.

This page puts the burger prices from every chain we track in one place, so you can compare them without opening eleven menus. Every figure comes from our individual chain pages, which we check against the official menus and apps every month. This round of prices was checked in September 2026. Most of these chains are franchised, so your branch may be a few rand off, and delivery apps add their own markup on top.

The cheapest burger at every chain

This is the lowest-priced burger on each chain’s standard menu, before any day deals.

WimpyQuick Bite Wimpy BurgerR49.90
Nando’sPulled Chicken Burger with CheeseR61.00
RocoMamasOld Skool BurgerR79.00
SpurOriginal Spur BurgerR86.90

The list splits into two groups. The counter-service chains (KFC, Hungry Lion, McDonald’s, Burger King, Pedros and Chicken Licken) all start below R35. The sit-down chains start much higher: Wimpy at R49.90, RocoMamas at R79 and Spur at R86.90. At those three you are paying for a table and a restaurant-style burger as well, so the R62 gap between the cheapest KFC burger and the cheapest Spur burger isn’t really a like-for-like comparison.

Signature burgers, side by side

Most people aren’t after the cheapest item on the menu. They want the burger each chain is known for. Here is what those cost.

The chicken chains win on price here too: a Zinger costs R20 less than a Big Mac®. Among the beef chains, the WHOPPER® and the Big Mac® are only R3 apart, which is why our Burger King vs McDonald’s comparison calls the signature burger a draw. If you want two patties, though, Burger King’s Big King® (R59.90) is R13 cheaper than the Big Mac®.

Five ways to pay less for a burger

  • Buy your Steers burger on a Wednesday. Wacky Wednesday brings the Original Burger down to about R35 each when you buy two. The rest of the week the same burger costs R54.90. Details are on our Wacky Wednesday page.
  • Check the Phanda range before ordering a standard Steers burger. The Phanda Rave Burger costs R34.90 and comes with small chips. A plain Steers Burger with no chips is R54.90.
  • Look at the McDonald’s value meals. The Cheeseburger Meal is currently listed at R39.90, only R9 more than the Cheeseburger on its own (R30.90).
  • Go double at Burger King, not McDonald’s. A double cheeseburger costs about the same at both (R43.90 vs R44.90), but for a bigger two-patty burger, the Big King® undercuts the Big Mac® by R13.
  • Order at the counter rather than on an app. In our delivery price check, KFC items cost between R6 and R40 more on Mr D than at the counter, before delivery and service fees.

Meat-free burgers

Most of the big burger chains now sell at least one burger without meat, and the prices vary more than you might expect.

KFC’s Hash Veggie is the cheapest by a long way, but it is built around a hash brown rather than a veggie patty. Burger King sells the Vegan Royale as vegan. If you eat vegan, check with the branch about egg and dairy in the buns and sauces of the others. Our KFC vegetarian menu guide also covers the meat-free sides and desserts.
