Fast Food Family Meals in South Africa: The Cheapest Ways to Feed Four (2026)

Quick answer: what is the cheapest family meal?

The cheapest way to feed a family of four is Hungry Lion’s Mega Meal: 8 pieces of chicken, 2 regular chips and 2 coleslaws for R119, or about R30 a person. For flame-grilled chicken, a Pedros full chicken with large chips (R149.99) costs just over half of a Nando’s full chicken with two sharing sides (R279). Two large pizzas from Roman’s cost R169.80. McDonald’s bundles don’t get cheaper as they get bigger: every McSmart Meal works out at about R66 a person.

Family meals are where the gaps between chains are widest in rand terms, because small differences per person add up across four or five people. We compared the family and sharing meals on our chain pages, checked in September 2026, and worked out what each one costs per person for a family of four.

Portions are not the same across the list: the Hungry Lion Mega Meal gives each person two pieces of chicken and shares two portions of chips, while the KFC Family Treat adds burgers and wings. Choose on what your family actually eats, and use the price per person to see what the extra food is costing you.

When a plain bucket beats a family meal

If your family doesn’t need the sides, a chicken-only bucket is often better value. At KFC, the 9-piece bucket costs R149.90, R20 less than the All In One Feast (R169.90), and you get three more pieces of chicken, though no sides. Adding two regular chips (R24.90 each) brings the bucket to R199.70, still R40.20 less than the Family Treat 8. Our KFC bucket price guide works out the price per piece for every size.

McDonald’s bundles have no bulk discount

McDonald’s charges almost exactly the same per person whatever size McSmart Meal you buy: R131.90 for two (R65.95 each), R198.90 for three (R66.30 each) and R263.90 for four (R65.98 each). There is no saving in ordering a bigger bundle to share, so order the one that matches the number of people. The full breakdown is on our McDonald’s menu page.

Day deals that beat the family menu

  • Hungry Lion on Thursdays: buckets are R20 to R30 cheaper, and the 20-piece bucket drops to R255 (R12.75 a piece). See Hungry Lion specials.
  • Steers on Wednesdays: Wacky Wednesday gets you two Original Burgers for R69.90. See Steers Wacky Wednesday prices.
  • KFC day deals: KFC runs different specials on different days, which can undercut its family meals. See KFC specials.
  • This month’s deals at every chain: see our fast food deals page, updated monthly.

Why family orders cost more on delivery apps

Delivery apps add a markup to each item, so the bigger the order, the more you pay on top. A KFC 9-piece bucket costs R149.90 at the counter and R189.90 on Mr D, R40 more before any delivery or service fee. If you can collect, a family order is where it saves you the most. Our Uber Eats and Mr D price comparison covers other chains.
