Two cappuccinos on a cafe table, one with a croissant and one with a cooked breakfast

Vida e Caffè vs Mugg & Bean: Coffee Prices, Breakfast and the Bottomless Deal Compared

Last updated:

These two chains sit in the same malls and the same office parks, but they are not really selling the same thing. Vida e Caffè is a coffee stop: fast, small, built around a cup and something from the pastry cabinet. Mugg & Bean is a restaurant that happens to be famous for coffee: table service, an all-day breakfast menu, and a bottomless filter coffee deal that has been running for years. This comparison puts their November 2026 prices side by side and works out which one deserves your money for a quick coffee, a working breakfast and a long sit-down.

The short version: for a single cup, Vida is cheaper on almost everything, usually by R4 to R6. The moment you want a second cup or actual food, Mugg & Bean pulls ahead, and its R49 bottomless coffee is the single best coffee deal in South African malls.

Coffee Prices, Side by Side

Both chains price coffee in three sizes. Vida calls them Solo, Mucho and Grande. Mugg & Bean’s size ladder is mainly an On The Move thing; in the sit-down restaurants an Americano is a flat R39 and a latte a flat R45, while cappuccinos run R39 to R49 in both formats. In-store prices below, checked November 2026. Full menus: our Vida e Caffè price guide and Mugg & Bean price guide.

The pattern is consistent: Vida undercuts Mugg & Bean on every standard cup, but never by a fortune. A mid-size cappuccino is R40 at Vida and R45 at Mugg & Bean. Where Vida stretches its lead is the extras menu: functional coffees like the collagen cappuccino (R51), CBD cappuccino (R49) and mushroom cappuccino (R57) have no equivalent at Mugg & Bean, and its iced range (Gelado R53, iced latte R42) is broader. Mugg & Bean answers with range of a different kind: bottomless drinks, which deserves its own section.

The Bottomless Difference

Mugg & Bean’s bottomless filter coffee costs R49 per person at sit-down restaurants, with no sharing allowed. Bottomless hot chocolate is R69, and bottomless fruity fizzes and peach iced tea are R66 each. Vida has no bottomless offer at all.

The maths is where this gets interesting. One cappuccino at Vida (R40) beats one filter coffee at Mugg & Bean (R35 single, or the R49 bottomless if you only drink one cup, which nobody does). But two coffees at Vida cost R70 to R80 before you have eaten anything, while the Mugg & Bean drinker is still on the same R49 ticket, with a table, Wi-Fi and a waiter. If your coffee stop involves a laptop and a second cup, Mugg & Bean is not just more comfortable, it is cheaper. If it involves one cup and ninety seconds, Vida wins and it is not close.

Breakfast and Food: The Real Gap

This is the section where the comparison stops being close. Mugg & Bean serves a full kitchen menu all day: an On-the-Go Breakfast at R69, a Classic Breakfast at R104, a South African Farm Breakfast at R154 and the Hearty Grill at R189, plus burgers (the Big Daddy is R199), a chicken and mushroom pot pie at R124, salads, and the Famous Giant Muffin at R52. Breakfast runs all day, which is the whole point of the place for a lot of its customers.

Vida’s food is a coffee’s supporting act: muffins at about R40 in store, croissants around R30 to R33, toasties in the R53 to R63 range, oats, granola pots and smoothies. It is decent, fast and priced fairly, but nobody holds a breakfast meeting over a toastie. A light Vida lunch, a chicken mayo toastie and a cappuccino, comes to about R103, roughly what Mugg & Bean charges for a cooked breakfast and a single filter coffee (R104 for the On-the-Go Breakfast plus coffee).

Formats: Sit-Down vs Grab-and-Go

Mugg & Bean’s 285 South African stores split into full sit-down restaurants, built for lingering, and On The Move counters at TotalEnergies forecourts, in Makro stores and at airports. Vida’s roughly 400 stores across Africa are mostly small-format: high-street cafés, Shell forecourts, drive-thrus, airport and hotel counters, and coffee bars inside other retailers, including SPAR and KWIKSPAR stores, Exclusive Books and Builders. Vida also owns the health-food chain Sweetbeet, which is where its sit-down energy goes.

Ownership is part of the story in 2026. Mugg & Bean, founded in 1996 at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront, has belonged to Famous Brands since 2009, the same group behind Steers and Wimpy. Vida, founded in 2001 on Kloof Street in Cape Town and majority-owned by Athena Capital since 2013, is being bought by Shoprite: the agreement to acquire 100% was signed in August 2026 and announced that September. It is agreed, not completed, and still needs regulatory approval, with completion expected during Shoprite’s 2027 financial year. Expect Vida counters inside more Shoprite-group stores if it goes through.

Loyalty and Apps

Vida’s app is the simpler deal: pay with the app and you earn 5% back on every purchase, held as a rand balance you can spend in store or send to a friend as a voucher. On a R40 cappuccino habit, five mornings a week, that is about R45 back a month. The app also handles order-ahead and barista tipping.

Mugg & Bean’s app pays cashback in “Beans” when you scan the QR code on your bill, and its heavy weapon is the Coffee Subscription, which its stores advertise as bringing cappuccinos down to under R20 each for subscribers. If you drink Mugg & Bean coffee daily, the subscription beats Vida’s 5% comfortably. If you are an occasional visitor, Vida’s automatic 5% asks nothing of you. Halaal Stores

Neither chain is halaal across the board; certification is store by store at both. Selected Mugg & Bean stores are SANHA-certified, including a number of On The Move forecourt outlets, and selected Vida stores carry NIHT certification, including some inside Exclusive Books and larger malls. Check the certificate at the specific store before ordering. Our guide to halaal fast food in South Africa explains how the certification bodies differ.

Honestly, the rivalry is mostly in shoppers’ heads. These chains overlap on one product, a cup of coffee, and even there they are selling it to different moments in your day. Vida is winning the footprint race and the per-cup price war. Mugg & Bean owns the table, the breakfast and the second cup. Pick by the hour you have, not by the logo.
