Quick answer: where is the cheapest breakfast?

The cheapest fast food breakfast is at McDonald’s, where a Hash Brown costs R33.90 and a Boerie Burger R35.90. For a cooked breakfast at a table, Spur’s Unreal Breakfast (R44.90) is cheaper than anything at Wimpy, where breakfasts start at R54.90 for the Mzansi Brekkie. McDonald’s serves breakfast until 10:30am on weekdays and until 11am at many branches on weekends.

McDonald’s is cheaper at the entry level and has a much bigger breakfast menu. Burger King’s one clear win is the egg muffin: its Egg & Cheese English Muffin is R10 cheaper than an Egg McMuffin®.

Both chains sell a boerewors breakfast, a very South African item. McDonald’s Boerie Burger (R35.90) is R14 cheaper than Burger King’s Boerie English Muffin (R49.90), and the Boerie Burger Meal is R48.90. Burger King’s Chakalaka Brekkie Burger is the other local touch, at R64.90.

Spur is cheaper at almost every level. The one exception is the standard breakfast, where Wimpy’s Classic Brekkie is R5 less than the Spur Kickstarter. The biggest gap is avo on toast: R44.90 at Spur and R79.90 at Wimpy.

One Spur detail to know: several breakfasts come with a choice of pork sausage or boerewors, and wors costs R8 more. The Trailblazer is R87.90 with pork sausage and R95.90 with wors, and the Ranch Breakfast is R119.90 or R127.90.

What time is breakfast served?
