How Much Is KFC by the Piece? Buckets and Every Piece Count
KFC South Africa sells plain chicken in three bucket sizes only: 9 pieces, 15 and 21 pieces. Every other number people search for, whether that’s 2, 3 pieces, or 12 pieces, comes inside a meal with chips, pap or burgers attached. What you usually want to know is the cheapest item on the menu with that many pieces in it, and the table below gives you exactly that, with the KFC price per piece worked out for each one.
Prices are the counter prices on our KFC menu page, last checked against KFC menu boards on 5 September 2026. The single-piece price comes from KFC’s own online ordering site. Delivery prices are further down, because they’re a lot higher.
KFC price per piece, for every count
| Pieces | What to order | What else comes with it | Price | Per piece |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 Piece Chicken | Nothing | R23.90 | R23.90 |
| 2 | Streetwise Two | Small chips or pap | R39.90 | R19.95 |
| 3 | Streetwise Three | Small chips or pap | R60.90 | R20.30 |
| 4 | Streetwise 4 | Regular chips | R78.90 | R19.73 |
| 5 | Streetwise Five | Chips | R99.90 | R19.98 |
| 6 | Big 6 Deal | Sides (KFC doesn’t list them online) | R139.90 | R23.32 |
| 6 | All In One Feast | Large chips, coleslaw, 2 mash and gravy | R169.90 | R28.32 |
| 8 | Family Treat 8 | 2 snack burgers, 4 Zinger wings, 2 chips, 2 coleslaw | R239.90 | R29.99 |
| 9 | 9 Piece Bucket | Nothing | R149.90 | R16.66 |
| 10 | Family Treat 10 | 2 snack burgers, 4 Zinger wings, 2 chips, 2 coleslaw | R269.90 | R26.99 |
| 12 | 9 Piece Bucket plus 3 single pieces | Nothing | R221.60 | R18.47 |
| 15 | 15 Piece Bucket | Nothing | R239.90 | R15.99 |
| 21 | 21 Piece Bucket | Nothing | R299.90 | R14.28 |
Seven pieces is missing from that table on purpose. KFC has just added a Streetwise 7 and a Streetwise 8 with Mega Chips, but they’re limited-time items and we haven’t seen them on a menu board yet. On Mr D they’re R176.90 and R201.90, so expect them to be cheaper at the counter.
The three buckets, and why the 21 is the best buy
A KFC bucket is Original Recipe chicken and nothing else. No chips, no rolls, no drink. That’s why the buckets win on price per piece: you’re only paying for chicken.
The jump between sizes is where it gets interesting. Going from the 9 to the 15 costs R90 more for 6 extra pieces, so R15 a piece. Going from the 15 to the 21 costs just R60 for another 6, which is R10 a piece. If you’re anywhere near needing 15 pieces, the 21 is the smarter order, and the leftovers are fine cold the next day.
As a rough guide, most adults eat two or three pieces with sides. That makes the 9 a meal for three or four people, the 15 for five or six, and the 21 for a party or a big family lunch. Add large chips at R27.90 each, or a few mini loaves at R13.90, if you want a proper meal out of it.
Piece counts KFC doesn’t sell
6 pieces
There’s no 6 piece bucket. The Big 6 Deal at R139.90 is the cheapest way to get six pieces, and it comes with sides for the table. The All In One Feast gives you the same six pieces plus large chips, coleslaw and two mash and gravy for R169.90. If you only care about the chicken, a 9 Piece Bucket at R149.90 gets you three extra pieces for R10 more than the Big 6.
8 and 10 pieces
These only come as Family Treats, which bundle two snack burgers, four Zinger wings and sides with the chicken. They’re good if you’d have ordered all of that anyway. If you just want 8 or 10 pieces, the 9 Piece Bucket is R90 to R120 cheaper.
12 pieces
KFC in the United States sells 8, 12 and 16 piece buckets, and a lot of what shows up when you search “12 piece KFC price” is American. In South Africa, the closest you can get is a 9 Piece Bucket plus three single pieces, which comes to about R221.60. That’s only R18.30 less than a 15 Piece Bucket, so most people are better off taking the 15.
24 pieces
There’s no 24 piece chicken bucket either. A 21 Piece Bucket plus three single pieces is about R371.60, and a 15 plus a 9 is R389.80. KFC used to sell a 24 Zinger Wings pack, but its online menu now only lists wings in packs of 4 and 10.
Buying one piece at a time
You can buy a single piece of Original Recipe chicken on its own. KFC’s own ordering site charges R23.90 to add one to a meal, and it’s R29.90 on Mr D. KFC doesn’t publish which cut you’ll get. Buying pieces one by one is the most expensive way to eat KFC chicken, but it’s handy for topping up a bucket that’s one or two short.
Cheaper than any of these: the day deals
KFC’s promotions list includes “10 for R129” on Mampara Monday and Kentucky Tuesday, and “12 for R170” over pay-day weekends. Counted as chicken pieces, that’s under R13 and about R14 a piece, which undercuts even the 21 Piece Bucket. The dates change, so check what’s running on our KFC specials page before you go.
What the same pieces cost on Mr D
We checked two KFC stores on Mr D on 25 September 2026, one in Cape Town and one in Mmabatho. Both had identical prices. For the items below, Mr D charged between 23% and 33% more than the counter, before the delivery fee.
| Item | Counter | Mr D | Extra |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Piece Chicken | R23.90 | R29.90 | R6.00 |
| Streetwise Two | R39.90 | R52.90 | R13.00 |
| Streetwise Three | R60.90 | R74.90 | R14.00 |
| Streetwise Five | R99.90 | R124.90 | R25.00 |
| Big 6 Deal | R139.90 | R175.90 | R36.00 |
| 9 Piece Bucket | R149.90 | R189.90 | R40.00 |
| 15 Piece Bucket | R239.90 | R305.90 | R66.00 |
| 21 Piece Bucket | R299.90 | R377.90 | R78.00 |
On a 21 Piece Bucket that’s R78 extra, which would almost buy you two more Streetwise Twos at the counter. We compared 25 KFC items this way, and looked at other chains too, in our guide to what delivery apps add to fast food prices.
Kilojoules per piece
KFC’s nutrition guide lists one piece of Original Recipe chicken at 830 kJ, or roughly 198 calories. It doesn’t give figures per cut or per bucket, so a 9 Piece Bucket is somewhere around 7,500 kJ if you take the average. A Streetwise Two with chips is 2,132 kJ and a Streetwise Three with chips is 3,176 kJ, according to the same guide.
