McDonald’s South Africa Menu Items You Can’t Get in America
Quick answer: South Africa’s McDonald’s sells a whole set of items America has never had: the McFeast with its McBraai sauce (about R107 to R113), the boerewors-inspired Boerie Burger (from R35.90), the Chicken Foldover, a full boerie breakfast, fizzy McFizz drinks and a Kit Kat McFlurry. Prices below are current October 2026 delivery-app prices (Mr D and Uber Eats), converted at about R16.40 to the dollar; in-store prices run slightly lower.
McDonald’s opened its first South African restaurant in Blackheath, Johannesburg, in November 1995, and now runs more than 400 restaurants here. The core menu looks familiar to any American: Big Mac, Quarter Pounder, McNuggets. But look closer and South Africa has quietly built its own menu around local tastes: boerewors, braai sauce and halaal chicken. Here is everything on it that you cannot order in the United States.
The McFeast: South Africa’s signature burger
The McFeast is the item South Africans abroad miss most. It stacks two beef patties with two local sauces: McBraai sauce (braai is the South African barbecue, and the sauce carries that smoky flavour) and McChicken sauce. It costs about R106.90 to R112.90 (roughly $6.50 to $6.90) on delivery apps, and the Spicy McFeast runs R112.90 to R119. America has nothing like it; the closest US relative, the Double Quarter Pounder, has no braai sauce and no local story.
The Boerie range: boerewors in a bun
Boerewors is South Africa’s spiced farmers’ sausage, and McDonald’s turned it into a patty. The Boerie range is the most South African thing on any global chain’s menu:
| Boerie item | Price (delivery apps) | In USD |
|---|---|---|
| Boerie Burger | R35.90 to R36.90 | about $2.20 |
| Boerie & Egg Burger | R42.90 | about $2.60 |
| Boerie Double | R47.90 | about $2.90 |
| Boerie & Hash Brown Stack | R49.90 | about $3.05 |
At under $3, the Boerie Burger is also one of the best-value burgers on the whole SA menu. For the full current menu with in-store prices, see our McDonald’s menu prices page.
Chicken items America doesn’t get
South Africa’s chicken range leans spicy and handheld. The Chicken Foldover (R71.90 to R74.90, spicy version R81.90 to R83.90) folds grilled chicken into flatbread; think of it as SA’s answer to the Snack Wrap, only bigger. The Jalapeño Chicken comes as single, double and triple meals (R43.90 / R56.90 / R68.90), and the Grand Chicken range (Special from R84.90) is a big-format chicken line sold across several countries but never in the US.
Breakfast, built the South African way
Breakfast is where the two menus split the most. The headline act is the plate simply called SA Breakfast: two boerie patties, scrambled eggs, tomato, fries and a bun, at R74.90 on its own or R94.90 as a meal with coffee. There is also a Breakfast Wrap (R62.90) and a Mega McMuffin (R62.90 to R64.90), neither of which exists in America.
Even the items with the same names are built differently. South African breakfast uses chicken sausage and chicken roll rather than pork: the SA Egg McMuffin is made with chicken roll, not Canadian bacon, and delivery listings repeatedly mark the breakfast items halaal. It is a quiet, practical difference that most comparison articles miss entirely.
Drinks and desserts: McFizz and Kit Kat McFlurry
On the drinks side, McFizz (about R31.10) comes in Watermelon, Passion Fruit and Lemon Litchi, flavours chosen for a hot climate. The standing dessert difference is the Kit Kat McFlurry (R55.10 to R57.90): America’s McFlurry line sticks to Oreo and M&M’s, while SA rotates Kit Kat and limited flavours like the current Golden Coconut Caramel McFlurry (R62.90, also seen in our Milky Lane vs McDonald’s desserts comparison).
On the menu right now: limited-time items
As of late October 2026, SA is also running items Americans cannot get at home: a line of McWraps (Korean BBQ, Lemon Pepper, Jalapeño and Spicy, R62.90 each), Chilli Cheese Tenders (R68.90), and leftovers from the World Menu Heist promotion that imported other countries’ specials in July 2026; the Philly Cheese Stack was still listed at R124.90 when we checked. Limited items rotate fast, so treat this section as a snapshot.
What America has that South Africa doesn’t
The trade is not one-way. Americans get the Snack Wrap ($2.99, back permanently since July 2025), which South Africa has never sold; its Foldover is the local answer. McGriddles, the sweet griddle-cake breakfast sandwich, are a US staple that has never appeared here. And the US Big Breakfast with Hotcakes ($8.29) has no SA equivalent: where America does pancakes, South Africa does a boerie plate. Our KFC vs McDonald’s comparison covers how the two chains price the meals South Africans actually buy, and the Big Mac Index 2026 explains why the same Big Mac costs $3.49 here and $6.22 in the US.
Why the menus differ
Three reasons. First, taste: boerewors, braai smoke and chilli heat are everyday flavours here, so the local menu leans into them. Second, the market: a large share of SA customers eat halaal, which is why breakfast meats are chicken-based. Third, price: a R35.90 Boerie Burger only makes sense in an economy where our cheapest fast food under R50 guide is a real shopping list. McDonald’s global playbook allows local menus in every country; South Africa just happens to have one of the most distinctive ones.

Visiting South Africa? Order these first
If you have one McDonald’s stop on a South Africa trip, make it count. Start with the McFeast, because the McBraai sauce exists nowhere else in the McDonald’s world. Add a Boerie Burger as a cheap second act (at about $2.20 it costs less than the fries in most US combos), and finish with the Kit Kat McFlurry. If you are there at breakfast time, the SA Breakfast plate is the most un-American McDonald’s meal you will ever eat, in a good way: sausage patties with proper spice, eggs, tomato and fries on one plate.
South Africans living in America report the Foldover and the McFeast as the two items they hunt for first on trips home. Neither has ever been tested on the US menu, and based on how distinctive the flavours are, both would need the American palate explained to them slowly, starting with the word “braai”.
